Wake Up Smoothly

Okay this has nothing to do with sleeping per se, but it DOES have to do with waking up! Sort of…

Basically, I think smoothies for breakfast are a great idea. (Get it? Smoothly? Smoothies? Okay) Actually, smoothies for any meal are a great idea. But especially in the morning, when, if you’re like me, you’re rushing around and barely have time for a satisfying breakfast because you’d prefer to sleep in as long as possible. Smoothies make it possible to have a balanced meal in the morning in less time than it would take to make bacon and eggs.

There are tons of different ways to make a delicious smoothie, but in it’s simplest form (fresh fruit, milk/yogurt and ice) you get a lot of nutrients to help kickstart your body in the morning and keep you fuller longer than a bowl of cereal might. And the best part is it takes all of 90 seconds to dump some fruit in, turn the blender on and let it do it’s thang!

Here are some ways to boost your smoothie with even more nutrients and flavor for a yummy breakfast option:

  • Add whey or soy. Easy easy way to get a good serving of protein. This is especially helpful for the vegetarians or vegans out there who want the extra boost. Protein powder is sold in grocery stores, vitamin stories and online and it comes in delicious flavors like chocolate and vanilla. So no excuses, get your protein!
  • Use frozen yogurt. Swap out the milk or regular yogurt and ice for some frozen yogurt in your favorite flavor. Depending how thick you want the smoothie to be, you might want to add a little milk, but using froyo lets you get creative with your smoothie flavor.
  • Add veggies. I know, it sounds disgusting. But adding spinach to your smoothie will give you that serving of greens you might miss out on later in the day (because let’s be honest, we don’t ACTUALLY have salad for every meal). And the flavor of the fruit and/or protein powder you add will mask the flavor of the spinach. Your smoothie may turn out green, but don’t be afraid of the color. Green is good!
  • Add oats/seeds. These may change the texture of your smoothie a little, but they add tons of fiber your body loves. And you can choose any kind of seeds or oats you like! A lot of people recommend flaxseed.
  • Add peanut butter. Again, an easy way to get some extra protein, and in this case, healthy fats. Peanut butter will also make your smoothie creamy and obviously make it taste like peanut butter (what’s not to love?).

Yogi Tea

I LOVE THIS TEA! But it has proven to be playing hard to get with me. I first discovered the Throat Comfort tea at work over the summer when I had a cold and my throat was super sore. When I saw the label I thought, “okay, sure…’throat comfort’…probably just regular tea…” But let me tell you…it is much better than regular tea.

This tea does exactly what it claims to do. It ‘coats and soothes the throat’ so well you won’t even remember it was sore in the first place. I remember thinking that I need to buy some of my own for the next time I have a cold. And so that’s what I tried to do, but I’m having a lot of trouble finding it in grocery stores.

The website says it’s sold in Safeway, Target, etc. so I checked Target and I found the Yogi brand but not this specific type. I won’t give up my search, but I may just end up ordering it online. And that is fine by  me because it’s worth it to get this miracle tea.

I’m curious to try the other Yogi teas because I’m sure they are probably all miraculous, but I’ll have to find somewhere to buy them first. Will keep everyone posted when I find a reliable carrier. Unless anyone already knows?
